Tear Trough
The eye area is the main focus of the face and fresh looking eyes are a major asset to the overall appearance of a healthy and youthful look.
As we approach our 30s and 40s one of the first signs of ageing that many people notice are the hollows around our eyes also known as the tear trough, which can make us look tired and fatigued.
Facial ageing is a three-dimensional process involving the skin, underlying fat, muscle and bone. Around the lower eyelid there is a complex arrangement of parcels of fat, and during the ageing process these parcels lose volume and essentially become deflated. The ligaments that bind these parcels of fat also begin to stretch and become lax.
All of this leads to an indentation and sagging effect in the tear trough area, between the lower eyelid and the cheek. When we have a groove like this, it casts a shadow, which makes us look constantly tired.
The Treatment Process
At your free consultation, we will review your detailed medical history and advise whether a tear trough filler treatment is appropriate for you.
A fast-acting topical anaesthetic is applied; we then wait for it to take full effect (about 30 minutes). By gently injecting fine filler into the tear trough, it plumps the skin out, ensuring that the light now bounces off the area (rather than being drawn into the hollow), which illuminates and softens the shadows that have been making us look tired.
In many cases the tear trough goes hand-in-hand with reinstating some gentle mid face volume, giving vertical support to the lower eyelid, where volume has again been lost.
The skin is very fine around the eye and the treatment must therefore be gentle, often done over two sessions, one month apart. As the area is susceptible to bruising, a cannula (blunt headed needle) is offered to significantly reduce the risk.
Once we have achieved the best result for you, it will last for up to 12 months.
